Box Office: Sequels, Sequels, Sequels!

Box office results are in and Kevin Hart and the gang take the #1 spot in a photo-finish victory against the double punch of last weekend’s sequels.

“Think Like A Man Too” won the box office over the weekend with $29.2 million. This debut is lower than the original’s $33.6 million opening weekend back in 2012 and considerably lower than the $41.5 million opening of “Ride Along” from earlier this year. This is more in line with the debut of “About Last Night” ($25.6 million).

So while Sony might be disappointed in those numbers, they’re cheering on Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum because “22 Jump Street” held on strong with $27.5 million at the #2 spot over the weekend. With a total of $109.9 million in two weeks, it’s outpacing “Neighbors” ($90.6 million) and “The Hangover” ($104.8 million), but treading behind “Ted” ($119.8 million). Chances are this won’t end up only surpassing “Neighbors” in the longrun, but it’ll at least pass the final tally of “21 Jump Street” ($138.4 million) within the next week or so.

Dreamworks Animation is facing major disappointment with the numbers posed by “How To Train Your Dragon 2” this weekend. In it’s second weekend, it ended up in the #3 spot, making $24.7 million, bringing it’s total up to $94.6 million so far. It’s just barely besting the numbers the original made at this point ($92.1 million) and another Dreamworks sequel, “Kung Fu Panda 2” ($92.8 million). I’m predicting the final numbers will be closer to the latter rather than the former considering stiff competition from “Transformers: Age of Extinction” this weekend.

In fourth place, Clint Eastwood’s musical adaptation, “Jersey Boys,” debuted with $13.3 million. Normally, those numbers would be considered disappointing, but it did better than Eastwood’s past three films on their opening weekend. Not sure if the film will have legs though considering that the film got mediocre reviews.

What do you think about the box office numbers? What did you see this weekend? Did you go to Vegas with Kevin Hart or Jersey with the Four Seasons? Or did you fly high with the dragons or do “something cool” with the Jump Street crew? Make sure to leave a comment below.
