Deadline broke the news today that Rian Johnson, the director of the 2012 hit film “Looper,” will be writing and directing “Star Wars Episode VIII.” The article also suggested that he will also be writing and directing “Episode IX” but then several websites since have debunked that news story stating that he will only “write the treatment for the ninth film.”
I LOVE this news!
I seriously love all the choices that Disney and LucasFilm have been making with these Star Wars films. I loved the choice of J.J. Abrams directing “Episode VII” and that two spinoffs are being directed by Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank respectively. Now the addition of Rian Johnson just gives me full faith in their plan for this universe. It’s clear they want to make quality content with these new films rather than the terrible prequels. And I absolutely loved Looper, which showed how great Johnson is at world-building. Can’t wait to see him knock it out of the park with “Episode VIII.”
