Box Office: “22” Jumps To The Top, “Dragon” Takes #2

Box office results are in and Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are seeming to make for a better duo than Hiccup and Toothless at the box office.

“22 Jump Street” shocked the world by taking the #1 spot over the weekend with a whopping $57.1 million over the weekend. That’s over $20 million more than the debut of “21 Jump Street” two years ago and a little over $10 million under directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s last debut with “The Lego Movie.” This is a gigantic success for the franchise that will only get better from here considering the amazing word of mouth for the film. I myself saw it again over the weekend and loved it even more.

On the more disappointing side, “How To Train Your Dragon 2” only ended up making $49.5 million over the weekend. While it’s an improvement over the original’s $43.7 million debut, we’re talking about a movie that came out four years ago. We should have seen at least a $60 million debut in line with “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” ($63.1 million). Still, I’m sure this movie will have incredible legs considering critics and audiences are raving about it. I plan on seeing it again sometime soon.

Coming in third place, “Maleficent” is still holding strong with $18.5 million in it’s third weekend, bringing it’s total up to $163 million. It’s slightly behind “Oz: The Great and Powerful” at this point in it’s run (that film made $177.1 million by it’s third weekend), but these are still extremely solid numbers.

I also wanna congratulate “Edge of Tomorrow” for it’s incredible hold in it’s second weekend, making $16.5 million. That brings the film’s total up to $57 million which is only a little under $10 million behind “Oblivion” at this point in it’s run. I’m positive that this film will continue to hold on well considering word of mouth has been so strong. Let’s continue to spread the word to make sure more people see this spectacular blockbuster.

What do you think about the box office numbers? What did you see this weekend? Did you chill with Hill/Tatum or Hiccup/Toothless? Or did you give “Edge of Tomorrow” a shot? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
