J.J. Abrams and company are currently filming “Star Wars Episode VII” as we speak, but that doesn’t mean LucasFilm isn’t looking ahead into the galaxy far, far away. They’ve already chosen Gareth Edwards (“Godzilla”) to direct one of the spin-off films set to open in late 2016. Now, news has just broken that we have our director for the second spin-off – Josh Trank.
Trank previously directed the surprise hit, “Chronicle,” back in 2012 and did an excellent job. He’s also currently in development directing the upcoming “Fantastic Four” reboot for 20th Century Fox.
To get things started, I think these spin-off films are completely unnecessary. I’d rather just see the “Star Wars” saga continue telling expansive stories instead of delving deep into the minor characters past. However, I gotta give LucasFilm credit for getting such talented directors to do these films. Edwards did an absolutely remarkable job directing “Godzilla,” one of my favorite films of the summer, and now they hire Trank, whom had such a creative and unique style to directing “Chronicle.”
What do you guys think of the “Star Wars” spin-off films? Do you like Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank as directors for these films? Who would you like to see named next?
“Star Wars Episode VII” opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on December 18, 2015.
Thank you guys so much for reading and, as always, “Follow the Screen, Scene X Scene!”
