Josh Brolin Has Been Cast As Thanos in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron”

thanos

Latino-Review just broke news that actor Josh Brolin (“No Country for Old Men”) has been cast to play Thanos (the purple dude during the credits of “The Avengers”) in Marvel’s upcoming films, “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” At first, I didn’t believe the news because Latino-Review has proven to be hit or miss when it comes to their breaking news stories.

It wasn’t until I saw it confirmed on Variety. Then this is where the tears began to flow.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not gonna say that Josh Brolin is a terrible actor or that Marvel is stupid for casting him as such a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But here’s the problem: Josh Brolin is not a good fit for this role. When I look at recent films he’s starred in since 2010, I don’t see what Marvel saw in him that they want him to play Thanos.

Ever since 2010, Brolin hasn’t chosen too many good films to star in. Normally, I wouldn’t blame the actor in these situations, but he gives very little effort in these films and turns in bland, sometimes terrible performances. You may point out the Oscar nominated film “True Grit,” but then I point to another comic book movie, “Jonah Hex,” one of the worst movies to come out that year. He also starred in two films last year that weren’t well received with “Gangster Squad” and Spike Lee’s remake of “Oldboy.” I found him uninteresting and generic in “Squad” and quite atrocious in “Oldboy,” my pick of the worst film of 2013.

When I think of a character like Thanos, I think of someone with a demanding presence, chewing up the scenery. I think of someone larger than life that terrifies me. Those are qualities that I just do not see Brolin representing well as an actor. In films where he was required to have a demanding screen presence in films like “Jonah Hex” and “Oldboy,” he failed miserably. I really don’t understand this pick at all.

What do you guys think about this casting? Do you think I’m crazy or do you think this is as much of a bad choice as I do? Comment below and let me know your thoughts.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on August 1, 2014 and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 1, 2015.

Thank you guys so much for reading and, as always, “Follow the Screen, Scene X Scene!”
